Your particular fishing techniques and preferences as well as the type and test of your line will influence your choice of fishing rod reel combos. Anglers who regularly use several different techniques during a day of fishing often carry three or four fishing rod combos each set up with different lures or live bait rigs.

The following recommendation will help you choose your rods best suited to your style of fishing. My preference is spinning fishing rod combos and many of my recommendations and examples will reflect that.

  • Rods

If you  on doing a lot of casting and trolling with baits and lures in sizes ¼ to 5/8 ounces you will want to select a spinning rod that is 5 ½ to 6 feet in length that is medium power and fast action. This rod is the best choice for general purpose fishing and will an important decision you need to make when you start the selection process when you go to select your fishing rod reel combos.

For casting small jigs and other lures and rigs weighing from 1/16 to 3/8 ounce, select a 5 to 5 ½ foot light power, fast action spinning rod This rod flexes easily on the back cast, so it works well in propelling light lures and baits.

If your specialty is casting and trolling large deep diving crank baits and heavy 1/2 ounce or larger live bait rigs than look for bait casting fishing rod combos that are 5 1/2 to 6 foot in length with medium power and fast action. Because this rod has more backbone than most spinning rods, it is better suited for heavier lures and rigs.

If you are a live bait fisherman you are going to want to look for a more robust fishing rod reel combos. Look for a 6 to 7 foot light power medium action spinning rod. These rods are a better choice for live bait fishing than shorter and stiffer rods because of there casting distance.

It’s particularly important to choose quality fishing rod combos that are designed to be used to target sensitive biting species such as perch and walleye. When sensitivity is your main objective then you want a fast action rod because slower action rods are not designed for sensitivity. Most serious fisherman prefer graphite or boron rods because they transmit vibrations better then fiberglass rods.

There are other features of the rod’s construction that you need to consider. For instance, for better vibration the rod blank should extend in one piece from the tip all the way through the rod handle and should be constructed using single foot line guides because double foot guides add weight to the rod and restrict the rods action.

Your welcome to use our recommendations on selecting fishing rod reel combos. Just remember that these recommendations are not set in stone and they are to be only used as guideline to help you choose quality fishing rod combos when your shopping for fishing equipment. These recommendations have been developed by my past 25 years of fishing experience. But there are always other choices so you make your own decision.
